Languages department holds workshop on Examination Management
In its quest to ensure proper setting of examination questions, drawing of marking guides, allocation of scores, and grading of answers to result computation, the Department of Languages, Federal Polytechnic Offa recently organized a workshop on Examination Management for its staff.
In his address, the Head, Languages Department, Dr. S. A. Ojeniyi pointed out that the workshop became necessary when the department saw the need to update the knowledge of its members on the basics of examination management. According to him “this workshop is necessitated by the need to acquaint ourselves with the contemporary modalities for examination management techniques, ranging from setting of questions, drawing of marking guides, allocation of scores, grading of answers to result computation.”
He hoped that staff members would take the advantage offered to update their experiences with the best practices in examination management. He advised the polytechnic management to also organize a workshop of this nature for all the academic staff of the Polytechnic.
The representative of Rector, Deputy Rector (Academic), Engr. Dr. J. M. Abdul appreciated the department of languages for coming up with such lecture aimed at updating the knowledge of its hardworking staff on examination management. He advised participants at the workshop to take the advantage of the lecture to enhance service delivery. He also assured them that the Management would deliberate on organizing a workshop of that nature for all the academic staff of the Polytechnic.
One of the resource persons, Rev. S. A. Adeyemo affirmed that grading is an integral aspect of teaching activities which helps to determine the performance of lecturers and that of students. He advised that grading should be handled carefully by the lecturers to protect their careers and integrity. He said: “grading is one of the important aspects of teaching activities which must be handled with utmost care and dexterity. This is because it helps to determine or evaluate one’s performance as a teacher/lecturer in imparting knowledge in teaching – learning activities.”
Mr. S. O. Akanbi, also a recourse person, enlightened the audience on process involved in setting a good test or examination questions. According to him “it is part of the academic responsibilities of a lecturer to prepare his or her test or examination items which must have been derived from a sample of topics that have been covered. The test or examination items must be properly structured and neatly presented. The language must not attract any form of ambiguity and should be free from any form of error. Both the general and specific instructions must be stated clearly.”
At the workshop were: Member of Governing Council, Engr. A. O. Ajao; Director Academic Planning, Dr. S. A. Raji; Director of Students’ Affairs, Mr. E. O. Aleminun; Dean of Exams, Dr. Sunday A. Alayemi; Dean Sch. of General Studies, Mr. M. K. Lawal among others.
